The reason for this change is to prevent pages from being counted as "articles" ("Статей" on Служебная:Статистика) merely because they have been marked for deletion (i.e., only because of the wikilinks provided by the template). I help to track article-count milestones at m:Wikimedia News, and quite often I will see a wiki pass a certain milestone (like 10,000 articles, or whatever) only because a bunch of pages were tagged for deletion (at least some of which did not have any links on them until the "delete" template was added to them) and not because of legitimate article creation. Once the marked pages have been deleted, the wiki falls below the milestone again. I hope you will agree that pages marked for deletion should not be counted as articles only because they have been marked for deletion. This can be prevented by simply not using normal [[wikilinks]] in the "delete" template. Such links can be converted to interwiki links, as I did (for example, linking to [[m:voy:ru:Project:Удаление|...]] instead of [[Project:Удаление|...]]) or by making them "external" links (for example, linking to [https://ru.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Project:Удаление ...]). @Dcljr:

1. Most Wikipedias use internal links in their "delete" templates.
2. If I’ve understood correctly, the fact that content namespace pages are counted as articles only when have internal links (but links to non‐content pages are also counted) seems to be more likely bug than feature. 217.117.125.83 13:51, 4 мая 2022 (MSK)

1. Which is why I'm continually seeing the issue I talked about above (pages suddenly being counted as articles when they are tagged for deletion). Sometimes when the issue comes up and it seems easy enough to make the change on a particular wiki (like this one), I will do it.
2. The criterion for article counting can be changed, but currently the only choices are: (1) all non-redirects in "content namespaces" that contain wikilinks, or (2) all non-redirects in all content namespaces. Presumably, for the first criterion, checking whether those links are to other content namespaces would be too resource intensive to be practical. But you can submit a Phabricator task to propose that change if you want. (There probably has already been such a task — I haven't checked.)    In that case, the nomination for deletion (with this template) would have no effect on the article count (regardless of which kinds of links are in the template), but of course the count will go down once the articles are deleted. - dcljr (обсуждение) 03:24, 7 мая 2022 (MSK)
